His single Breakaway has been a runway hit that propelled him to super stardom. Now, Norman Doray wants to continue to do what he loves best — play house music the world over. What are the biggest trends in the EDM scene currently? Trends run differently in different parts of the world. Electronic Dance Music (EDM) was big in Europe a decade ago and is a more regular thing there these days.
But it is huge in the USA, Asia and the rest of the non-European countries of the world. EDM has a great future in India and is well appreciated now!
With more and more popular artists like the BEP, JLo, Pitbull, Usher and others eating into the club music scene, what are its effects on EDM. There are two sides to it really. Usher, Pitbull and the others are cool and do pop and hip hop — but that’s not the same as house music. Quality dance music that’s well seasoned and evolved, is house. And a true lover of house would want nothing but more of it!
Dubstep is the hottest sound in EDM right now. Care to comment on it? Dubstep is something the young teenagers in Europe are turning to. It’s a cross between house, electronic and rock ’n’ roll. I’m not a big fan but it’s what the youth loves and what it wants.
Skrillex recently said in an interview that “Current DJs are nothing but computer geeks who take their music seriously”. Is that true? I don’t really believe this. And in my case it’s very different from what I do. Veteran house fans would agree across the world.
Do you think EDM gets enough airwaves and TV space in mainstream media? It’s surely getting a fair amount of spotlight and is going in the right direction today.
What have you heard about Bangalore? Are you excited about coming here? I enjoy being in Bangalore and have been here about six times already. I love the place and am excited to be there again.
What can the fans expect from you this time? I enjoy playing house for the people and for myself and so I’ll be picking up the pulse of the party when I’m there. There’ll be some good groove and vibe.
What are the projects you are working on currently? I’m looking at releasing five to six singles this year, so,there’s going to be a lot of music from me in 2012.
Who are the artists you loved collaborating with and please give details on future collaborations. There are some huge tracks coming up in 2012 and I’ll be working with French DJ Arno Cost, German DJ Eddie Thoneick and a few other favourites of mine.
Could you tell us a little bit more about your club hit Breakaway? I was called to UK to do a remix of Breakaway for the UK singer Tawiah. And listening to her track, I thought a single would be better — so that’s what it became. And the world is loving it so far.
